Empowering your Vocabulary

How Can I Remember All Those SAT Words?
Exams like the SAT, PSAT, and GRE are vocabulary intensive, and today’s students are often better versed in proper nouns, such as the names of popular websites and musicians, than the common nouns they need for English language proficiency (skill, ability, competence).
Learning vocabulary can be a fun and creative activity, if you invent clever ways to help you remember the words along the way. These “memory tricks” are also called mnemonic devices.
To remember that archaic means old or ancient, just think of the Noah’s Ark story in the bible. Is that a new story? No, “Noah’s Ark” is an archaic tale.
The word curtail means to cut short, reduce, diminish, or abridge. Change the final “l” to “n” to obtain curtain. “The curtain coming down curtails the play.”
My student Daniel asked me how to remember that ephemeral means temporary, not permanent, or not lasting long. Do you see that the end of the word looks like “emerald.” In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy’s visit to Emerald City is ephemeral – she “won’t be there for long” because she wants go back home.
To learn that mundane means common or ordinary, just remember, “After a fun, exciting weekend, Monday is just another mundane day.”
Cameron said he could never remember that prevaricate means to lie or be untruthful. I said, “If you vary your statements to the police, you must be prevaricating.” Don’t get confused with the word propagate. “Rabbits will propagate quickly, if you close them behind a proper gate.” Propagate means to reproduce or spread.

Background and Experience: I graduated from Columbia University in 1991 with a BA in mathematics and completed a year of graduate school in the Columbia University Mathematics Department in 1992. Before starting my own tutoring business, I was trained and employed by two companies for two years: The Math Set and Advantage Testing, both of Atlanta, GA. In 2004 I founded the business, Insight Tutoring of San Francisco, which I have directed until the present. I have worked with hundreds of students from public and private schools across the Bay Area, including Lowell, SOTA, Lick-Wilmerding, UC Berkeley, the San Francisco School, University High School, Saint Ignatius, and many others. For a combined 10 years, I conducted on-site, comprehensive SAT prep classes at the International High School (FAIS/IHS) and Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep.
Parent and Volunteer: I am the proud parent of three children myself and am happy to give back to the community by volunteering as a classroom tutor about two hours per week in their elementary school.
Word on the Street: I often overhear my students saying, “I learned more in one hour with David than in one week of math at school.”
