Welcome! And thanks for visiting. My name is David Freeling, and I am the Noe Valley Tutor. For the past 14 years, I have been helping students achieve their academic goals and improve their fundamental math and English skills. I work with kids and adults of all ages in areas such as reading comprehension, vocabulary development, essay and personal statement writing, test-prep, history, science, study skills, and all levels of math from basic arithmetic to calculus, statistics and beyond.
All sessions are taught by me personally, most in my business office, which is centrally located in San Francisco, in the heart of Noe Valley, at 24th and Castro. Now, using the internet, I can work with you from wherever you are in the world. Online lessons are conducted through a combination of Skype, phone calls, and email, which includes files that we will send each other. Whether you wish to meet me in person or online, get started by calling or emailing me and letting me know your specific academic needs.

Background and Approach:As early as my undergraduate and graduate school years at Columbia University, I have always enjoyed tutoring, which comes naturally to me. I excel at explaining problems in simple, easy-to-understand language, from multiple perspectives. In every session, the student comes first and is an active participant, engaging in learning while I guide him or her through the material. I try to instill in students both a love of education and feelings of self-confidence and self-reliance. I enjoy building a lasting rapport with the individual child or young adult and am constantly adapting my style to fit the student’s needs and interests. My students’ parents will often proclaim, “My child has learned more in one hour with you than in 2 weeks at school.”
Experience: Since 1997, I have been a professional tutor, teacher and learning specialist. I work with students from many of the best public and private institutions in the Bay Area, including Lowell, SOTA, Lick-Wilmerding, UC Berkeley, the San Francisco School, University High School, SI, and many others. For a combined 10 years, I have conducted comprehensive on-site SAT prep courses at the prestigious schools: Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep. and the International High School (FAIS-IHS).
Expertise:When you study with me, you know that I can not only solve the given math or verbal problem, but that I also understood the question at a deeper level. For years I have been developing the teaching materials that help students ace their exams and improve their grades. My First Fun SAT Book presents proven, effective strategies for the SAT in an engaging and concise approach. I have been contracted by the publishing company Barron’s to develop Barron’s Six GRE Practice Tests (to be released in 2012). My new book Big Fat Words, to be published in early 2012, presents the most fun and funny way ever to learn SAT and GRE level vocabulary through creative cartoons.
Rates: I charge a sliding scale rate of $68 to $78 per full hour lesson, which means your contribution will be any amount within this range that you feel comfortable with -- your choice. Group rates are available, and students are encouraged to join with a friend. Two students sharing a lesson pay $40 to $45 each, while three students pay $30 to $35 each. Tutorials cancelled less 24 hours in advance are subject to a partial cancellation fee. Some sliding scale discounts and free barter exchange for your professional services will be considered. I accept cash and check payment only.
