Welcome! If you or your child are looking to excel at school or increase your understanding of fundamental concepts, you have come to the right place. I offer expert professional tutoring in the areas of math, English, history, and test-prep. I teach all lessons personally and offer dedicated one-on-one attention to help kids succeed academically. I have over twenty years of experience working with a wide range of students of all levels of abilities and backgrounds. I've helped many hundreds of students boost their grades and prepare for exams such as the SAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE, HSPT, GRE, and GMAT.
Call, text, or email me at any time to get started: [email protected] or 415-596-0248. I offer lessons in person in San Francisco or Berkeley, or anywhere in the world through online tutoring.
My students find me patient and dedicated at explaining challenging concepts from multiple perspectives. I work with all ages, with a primary focus on grades 2 through 12.
Background: I am both a tutor and author. My book VocabMonster uses creative cartoons and mnemonic devices to teach advanced English vocabulary. My book, 6 GRE Practice Tests, published by the Barron's, offers students a glimpse of what to expect on the Graduate Records Exam, and instructs them on how to ace the test. I have an undergraduate degree and a year of graduate work in mathematics from Columbia University, in New York. I worked at two professional tutoring agencies before starting my own business, Insight Tutoring of San Francisco, since rebranded as "Noe Valley Tutor." Since 2001, I've worked with students from a wide range of public and private schools throughout the Bay Area and conducted on-site, comprehensive SAT prep classes at the International High School and Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep.
Philosophy: I have always believed in making education fun and exciting. I seek to engage and motivate my students, and bring out their own curiousity and creativity.
Rates:
The rate for all lessons, in person or online, is $95 per hour. Most lessons are one hour, but other lengths are available upon request and billed at a prorated basis.
With a few exceptions, all lessons in a calendar month are billed as a single statement. Your timely payment for the entire month of tutoring ensures that I can keep costs low for all students.
Cancellations: Sorry, all lessons cancelled less than a full day in advance for any reason are billed in full. By letting me know a MINIMUM of 24 hours in advance, you allow me to find other students in need to fill your time slot. Lessons cancelled or rescheduled between 24 and 48 hours in advance are billed a nominal $20 cancellation fee.
Assessments: Detailed assessments of a student's progress are available upon request but not included in the hourly tutoring rate. Families who seek an analysis of their child's needs are generally billed one-half hour for a progress report.
Ways to save: Group lessons can be a good way to save. Students who need help in the same area may be able to coordinate and share the lesson. Rates are $60 to $65 per student per hour for two-on-one tutoring.
Barter: If you have expertise in any of the following areas, we may be able to arrange a professional exchange of services: video editing and marketing, handywork, bodywork, vocal training.
Parent and Mentor: I am the proud parent of three kids and seek to mentor my clients with the same empathy and concern that I show toward my own children.
Results: I often overhear my students saying, “I learned more in one hour with David than in one week of math at school.” Testimonials and references available upon request.
